It takes place from November 18, 2023, to January 6, 2024, and with it, you’ll see the classic light show and take part in festivities for the whole family. The Natchitoches Christmas Festival 2023 is just the latest incarnation and today we’re going to tell you the history of the Natchitoches Christmas Festival.
Max Burgdorf was the Superintendent of Utilities for Natchitoches back in 1927. He wanted to create a Christmas event that would perfectly sum up the Christmas spirit for the people of Louisiana. He purchased enough 10-watt Christmas tree bulbs to cover all of Front Street and capped it all off with a display on the riverbank.
Up until the year 2002, the setpieces on the riverbank were permanent. This led to the producers of the movie “YaYa Sisterhood” finding a different place to film their movie because the movement of the Christmas decorations was non-negotiable. Starting in the 1940s, there is a parade to commemorate the Christmas season, and you know how much Louisiana loves parades!
Every Saturday from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, there’s a massive fireworks show that lights up Natchitoches with holiday glory. It brings tourists from all over Louisiana to witness one of the greatest holiday season fireworks displays around. And if you brought your appetite, you can have everything from funnel cakes to fried alligator! It all adds up to a truly magical holiday experience here in the heart of the South.
